Roles and Responsibilities
Sponsors
Role
The sponsoring body takes overall responsibility for quality but not
for indemnity of research. Research within the NHS or social care services
in England must have an organisation willing and able to take on the responsibilities
of sponsor (NB THIS IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW AND NEW DOH GUIDELINES WILL
APPEAR IN THE NEW YEAR).

A research sponsor must gain approval
from the Department of Health before acting as a |

sponsor. |

A sponsor may be an NHS Trust, University, Charity,
or a private Company |
| • |
The host academic organisation will normally sponsor
student projects. |

When a research team originates from another sector,
the sponsor will normally be from |
| |
that other sector. |
Brent PCT WILL NOT automatically sponsor research projects where a potential
research project has not found a suitable sponsor.
Responsibilities
| • |
ensure that the research proposal respects
the safety and well-being of participants and the relationship with
care professionals. |
| • |
ensure that the research proposal is worthwhile,
feasible, of high scientific quality and represents good value for
money. |
| • |
ensure that the proposed systems and resources will
allow appropriate data analysis and data protection. |
| • |
ensure that arrangements are in place for notification
of any significant developments. |
| • |
ensure that dissemination of findings has been planned. |
| • |
ensure that the organisation responsible for ongoing
management and monitoring is clearly documented. |
| • |
ensure that there is arrangement as to who will provide
indemnity. |
| • |
ensure that intellectual property rights are addressed
in research contracts or terms of grant awards. |
